زبان فرانسه، به لحاظ اهمیت جهانی پس از انگلیسی و در رقابت با زبان آلمانی جای دارد. امروز شمار گویشوران آن نزدیک به 200 میلیون نفر در سراسر دنیا می رسد. زبان فرانسه در برخی کشورها مانند فرانسه زبان رسمی، در برخی کشورها به همراه زبانی دیگر زبان رسمی بوده و در برخی کشورهای نیز زبان اداری، زبان اقلیتی از مردم و یا زبان سوم است. رویهمرفته از بلژیک و لوگزامبورگ گرفته تا مستعمرات پیشین فرانسه در آفریقا، سرزمین مهاجران فرانسوی در آمریکا (کانادا) و نیز آمریکای لاتین می توان فرانسه زبانان را یافت.
پس از جنگ دوم جهانی زبان انگلیسی که به زبان برتر تبدیل شده بود، با سرعت بالایی شروع به گسترش و تبدیل شدن به یک زبان جهانی کرد. پس از آن پیشرفت های صنعتی در غرب و فرایند جهانی شدن نیز بر سرعت این روند افزود، تا جایی که گاه با انداختن نگاهی به اطراف خود شاهد اهمیتی کاذب برای زبان انگلیسی هستیم و همه روزه به افراد بسیاری برمی خوریم که برای یادگیری این زبان اهمیتی بیش از زبان مادری خود قائلند.
 با این همه زبان شناسان، آینده ای متفاوت از آنچه در اذهان عموم  می گذرد، برای این زبان جهانی شده پیش بینی می کنند و سرنوشت آن را به ماجرایی پیوند می دهند که بر زبان امپراطوری شکوهمند روم گذشت. از سوی دیگر مردم شناسان نیز که فرایند جهانی شدن را به دلیل کمرنگ سازی و یا از بین بردن خرده فرهنگ ها و زبان های بومی  زیر سوال می برند، برای حفظ زبان های غیرغالب، محلی و حتی زبان های شفاهی و به دنبال آن فرهنگ هایی که در آن سوی این زبان ها وجود دارند، اهمیت خاصی قائلند و به مناسبت های گوناگون نسبت به از میان رفتن این زبان ها هشدار می دهند. همچنین بسیاری از کشورهای غیر انگلیسی زبان از راه های گوناگون و رقابت شدید با این زبان، به دنبال حفظ زبان، ادبیات و فرهنگ خود از این هجوم جهانی هستند.
فرانسه از جمله کشورهایی است که با ایجاد سازمان فرانکوفونی، ارائه بورس ها و جوایز ادبی سالیانه، ایجاد پایگاه های اینترنتی پرشمار برای آموزش زبان، پخش فیلم ها و بازی های کمک آموزشی و فرهنگ لغت های زبان فرانسه و نیز شناساندن ادبیات فرانسه به مردم دنیا، در امر انتشار این زبان حداکثر تلاش خود را به کار گرفته است.
